Northwoods Bird Dogs offers one of the finest facilities in the country for training grouse dogs. Its location in east central Minnesota is ideal for abundant wild bird exposure. Jerry Kolter is a nationally recognized trainer whose dogs have won numerous grouse dog championships and awards. Clients from Wyoming, Colorado, Oklahoma, Mississippi, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois and Nova Scotia have sent their dogs to Jerry for training.
Right out the kennel door, Jerry has access to more than 2,000 acres of training ground. Within a short distance are thousands of additional acres of public and private land that include excellent habitat for native populations of ruffed grouse and woodcock. Trips to North Dakota in late summer and to southern states in the winter also provide varied wild bird training opportunities.
Jerry Kolter has been training bird dogs for more than 20 years. He brings each dog to its fullest potential through proper conditioning, proven training techniques and extensive exposure to birds. Jerry teaches commands using repetition until the dog understands; then introduces low-level ecollar stimulation to reinforce correct behavior. Owners are proud of the confidence, intensity and style their dogs exhibit as a result of Jerry’s training.
Northwoods Bird Dogs knows it is imperative that the owner understands how to carry on with the training process. All training programs conclude with a one-hour, hands-on, in-the-field session with Jerry, owner and dog. A written evaluation and a continuation plan are sent home with the owner. In addition, Jerry is always available for follow-up questions and concerns.
Field Trials
The training programs of Northwoods Bird Dogs provide an excellent foundation for dogs with the talent to compete in field trials. In addition to extensive wild bird exposure, a high degree of polished training, conditioning and handling is necessary for a dog to win at championship-level trials. Jerry has the know-how, experience and resources to bring a dog to that level.
