What a positive start to 2013! Three of our dams have come into season earlier than Jerry and I had anticipated. Even though we had to tweak our plans a bit, all is now settled.
Our chosen sire for Northwoods Prancer was CH Westfall’s Black Ice but Ice died an early and unfortunate death in December. Jerry researched alternatives and after a visit to Sunny Hill Plantation in northern Florida, we chose Sunny Hill Hawk.
Hawk is a 10-year-old full brother to Ice–out of the outstanding nick of Rockacre Black Hawk x Elhew Katie Lee. He is black and white with an evenly masked head and has the same calm, intelligent brown eyes of Ice. He is maybe just a bit huskier than Ice in terms of muscle and bone but otherwise about the same height. In addition, Hawk has the same bird-finding strength. According to his trainer, Hawk has pointed more quail than any other in his 30-dog string.
Prancer should whelp about March 12.
Northwoods Chardonnay was next. Breeding her to Blue Chief (frozen semen) was logistically not possible this year so we decided to go to CH Ridge Creek Cody (CH Can’t Go Wrong x CH Houston’s Belle), owned by Larry Brutger of St. Cloud, Minnesota. Cody is a full brother to CH Houston’s Blackjack that was bred to Chardonnay with great success in 2011. Cody tore his ACL last fall but is here in the South with his handler Shawn Kinkelaar for rehab.
If all goes as planned, Chardonnay should whelp about March 29.
Houston’s Belle’s Choice just came into heat and is planned to be bred to Blue Shaquille in late January. This is the third repeat breeding. From the first litter came such stellar males as Lager and Porter and females Gail, Chablis and Chardonnay. The 2011 litter produced Jeter, Gus (Zep), Sue, Carly and Tyler. The combination of Shaq’s strength and bird-finding ability with Choice’s talent and style lines up perfectly. Both parents also have unusually endearing personalities which their puppies inherit.
Choice’s whelp date should be about April 3.
